The Nation’s Nonprofit Refurbishers

Mission Driven and Creating Impact

Supporting nonprofit technology refurbishment organizations focused on ending the digital divide

AFTRR: Alliance for Technology Refurbishing & Reuse

United by the concept of technology reuse and a shared vision of closing the digital divide, the Alliance for Technology Refurbishing and Reuse (AFTRR) is a collective of over 80 nonprofit technology refurbishers serving communities across the nation. Ranging in size and scope from large IT asset disposition solutions to local, volunteer-driven organizations, nonprofit organizations within AFTRR process and deploy no-cost and low-cost computers to people impacted by the digital divide, often paired with digital skills training and support.

Digitunity provides support to organizations within AFTRR in the form of hosting a national conference each year, supporting working groups, matching corporate technology donors with recipient refurbishers, advocating for policies that help strengthen the work of the group, making key introductions, sharing opportunities, and amplifying the exceptional work being done nationwide.

The Computers for Veterans and Students Act will direct repairable, out of use federal computers to nonprofit refurbishers across the nation.

The Computers for Veterans and Students Act, a bipartisan effort led in 2022 by Representative Abigail Spanberger, will ultimately provide federal surplus and repairable computers to non-profit computer refurbishers. Participating organizations will then repair and distribute these computers to veterans, students, and others in need. The cross-sector effort to pass the landmark legislation involved Digitunity, Public Knowledge, Common Sense Media, the offices of Representative Spanberger and Senator Maggie Hassan, and members of the AFTRR community.

Digitunity, together with representatives from select nonprofit refurbishers, is currently collaborating with the U.S. General Services Administration to help inform the design and implementation of the new program, which is estimated to kick off in 2026.

Individuals In Need of a Computer

At Digitunity, we receive numerous requests every month from individuals across the country looking for assistance with obtaining a computer for work, school, or digital training. However, Digitunity does not provide computers directly to individuals. Instead, we connect donors of computers with community-based organizations, who then distribute them to individuals in need. Many AFTRR member organizations have options for individuals to apply to receive a low-or-no cost computer.

If you are seeking a computer, we encourage you to search for a nonprofit refurbisher near you and reach out to them directly to learn how each organization qualifies and distributes computers to recipients. Click on the map below to begin your search.
